University of Missouri Health Care offers pulmonary, critical care and environmental medicine services if you have a breathing or lung condition caused by a life-threatening illness or exposure to a toxic substance at work.

Pulmonary medicine

Our pulmonologists treat diseases and conditions of the chest, including:

  • Asthma. A condition in which inflammation in the airways makes it difficult to breathe.
  • Chest infections. This includes viral and bacterial infections that affect your breathing and respiratory function.
  • Emphysema. A disease that damages the sacs in your lungs, making breathing progressively more difficult.
  • Lung cancer. This includes cancerous tumors that originated in or spread to the lungs.
  • Pneumonia. This is a type of infection that causes swelling in the air sacs in one or both lungs and may lead to fluid buildup.
  • Tuberculosis. This is a bacterial infection in the lungs that is potentially serious.

Critical care medicine

Critical-care medicine is focused on the diagnosis and management of life-threatening conditions that require organ support and invasive monitoring.

Environmental medicine

The environmental medicine department performs routine medical surveillance for individuals who need employment medical exams. Often, these are individuals whose jobs entail special medical risks are usually protected in part by federal rules which require their employer to offer medical examinations or services that should discover and/or prevent work-related injuries.

Examples are persons exposed to hazardous materials such as:

  • Construction workers
  • Emergency responders
  • Inspectors of hazardous waste sites
  • Members of the military

Appointments

To schedule an appointment at the Medicine Specialty Clinic, please call 573-882-8788 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Clinic staff members appreciate 48 hours’ notice if you cancel an appointment.

The clinic is on the first floor of the University Hospital in Room C1001. Patients may park in the visitor parking garage at the east end of University Hospital.

Prescription Refills

Please have your pharmacy contact the clinic if you need a prescription renewed.  You may also contact the clinic with your Health Connect Portal Account or you may also call 573-882-8788 and select option 3. When you call for a refill, please provide your:

  • Name
  • Dosage
  • Frequency of the medicine
  • Pharmacy name and phone number

Your pharmacy may fax a request directly to the refill nurse at 573-884-1751.

Questions

If you have non-emergency questions about your pulmonary problem or about labs or tests performed at the University Hospital, please call the Medicine Specialty clinic nurse at 573-882-8788. A clinic nurse is available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday to help answer your questions and direct your call to your physician as needed.

After clinic hours

If you have an urgent need to speak with a pulmonary physician after 5 p.m. or on the weekends and holidays, call the University Hospital operator at 573-882-4141 and ask for the pulmonary fellow on call.
