Cosmetic Breast Surgery
Whether you’re looking for breast fullness or symmetry or breast reduction, you’ve come to the right place. MU Health Care plastic surgeons specialize in performing safe breast enhancement surgery — and achieving natural looking results.
If you’re not satisfied with the size, shape or appearance of your breasts, you’re not alone. MU Health Care plastic surgeons routinely provide breast augmentation and other breast cosmetic surgeries.
Our patients turn to us for many reasons. For example, plastic surgery can help if:
- Your breasts have sagged or lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight loss
- Age-related changes have caused your breasts to droop
- One of your breasts is larger (or falls lower) than the other
- You have large breasts that cause back pain or other problems, or are out of proportion with the rest of your body
- You’d like to increase the size of your breasts
Breast enhancement services we offer
Our breast plastic surgeons specialize in several types of surgery:
- Breast augmentation: We increase your breast size by placing implants under your breast tissue or chest muscles. MU Health Care offers silicone and saline implants.
- Breast lift: Your surgeon removes excess breast skin and reshapes some of your breast tissue. This raises your breasts higher on your chest, giving them a more youthful appearance.
- Breast reduction surgery: We reduce the size of your breasts by removing a certain amount of skin, tissue and fat.
- Breast implant removal: Your surgeon takes out your breast implants because you no longer want them or because it’s become medically necessary.
What to expect
Here’s what you can expect if you’re considering breast plastic surgery at MU Health Care:
Initial consultation
Your first appointment allows us to learn more about you and what you’re looking for. Depending on the type of procedure you’re interested in, we’ll discuss factors such as:
- Your medical history: We’ll review your personal and family history of breast cancer and whether you’re planning to have (or done having) children. We’ll also discuss any other breast surgeries you may have had.
- Your goals: We’ll make sure we understand how you want your breasts to look after surgery. You will look through before-and-after photos, so you can show us visual examples. This helps us set realistic expectations about the look you want.
- Your budget: Though breast reduction may sometimes be covered by insurance, cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance, so it’s important for you to understand how much your procedure will cost. We’ll give you cost estimates for each procedure you’re considering.
After your consultation, you should take all the time you need to decide whether (and where) to have surgery.
The day of surgery
Each type of breast enhancement surgery requires different steps and different surgical techniques. This means the length of each procedure varies.
However, nearly all breast plastic surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure. This means you’ll go home the same day.
Your surgeon will let you know about your anesthesia options.
After surgery
After surgery, we’ll make sure you understand what to expect during your recovery. For example, we’ll let you know:
- Whether you’ll need to wear a special support bra, and for how long. If you’ve had breast implants, we’ll provide you with two of these bras.
- What complications to watch out for, immediately after surgery and in the future.
- Whether you have any activity restrictions.
- How often you should return for follow-up visits.
We’ll give you a detailed set of instructions, and answer all your questions, before you return home.
Life-long breast implant care
If you have breast augmentation at MU Health Care, you can turn to us with questions or concerns about your implants for the rest of your life — free of charge.
For example, call us if you ever develop unusual symptoms in or around your breasts. We’ll perform an evaluation and order any necessary tests that help us confirm, rule out or treat problems.
These problems may include:
- A leaking or ruptured implant
- A complication called capsular contracture (scar tissue build-up around the implant)
- An implant that has shifted position
Our goal is to make sure your breast augmentation experience is as safe and smooth as possible — even many years down the road.
Breast plastic surgery expertise you can trust
An important step when deciding to have breast plastic surgery is selecting who will perform your surgery, and where it will take place. You want to make sure you’re in good hands before, during and after your procedure.
At MU Health Care, all of our plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Plastic surgeons can only earn (and maintain) ABPS board certification if they continuously meet strict standards of care.
So, when you choose one of our breast plastic surgeons, you can take comfort knowing they’ve met rigorous education and training requirements. This helps ensure you have a safe procedure and positive experience.
