COLUMBIA, Mo. — As a cancer survivor, Freda Swigert understands the physical and mental toll the disease takes on the body. Now this Lincoln, Mo., native plans to test her physical and mental endurance again, as she bikes nearly 500 miles across four states to raise money for Ellis Fischel Cancer Center.
Beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, Swigert will bicycle from Marshall Junction, Mo., at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Highway 65, to Nashville, Tenn. Along the way, Swigert will collect donations to aid cancer patients at Ellis Fischel.
Swigert lost her father and two aunts to cancer. Three years ago she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. While the 41-year-old admits she has health problems of her own, she says this bicycle ride isn’t about her needs, but rather making a difference in easing the pain cancer patients suffer through every day.
“I want to do what I can to find a cure for cancer or help a cancer patient into remission,” said Swigert. “That’s what is important to me.”
