The Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD Trauma Center is the only American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified Level I Trauma Center in mid-Missouri and one of only three in the state. Staff in University of Missouri Health Care's emergency rooms treat more than 43,000 patients each year.
University Hospital's comprehensive program for the care of injured children and adults uses a multidisciplinary team approach. Specially trained physicians, nurses, therapists, technicians and social workers collaborate in the provision of high-quality patient care from the time of the injury through the rehabilitation process. As an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center, a tertiary care referral center and a regional resource center, University of Missouri Health Care has the capability of providing total care of every aspect of injury including prevention.
The trauma team is led by a board-certified surgeon with fellowship training in trauma care and includes a team of trauma surgeons trained in the operative and nonoperative care of the trauma patient, two orthopedic traumatologists with fellowship training in the surgical repair of fractures and a team of board-certified pediatric surgeons accredited in critical care. A trauma nurse coordinator is responsible for program management and coordination of care. Trauma nurse clinicians manage the patient care process from the point of trauma resuscitation throughout the continuum of care.
Attending physicians in all subspecialties are available for consultation 24 hours daily and assist referring physicians in the transfer of patients to University Hospital. Services include a 24-hour trauma operating room, priority laboratory capability, hyperbaric oxygen center, 24-hour computerized tomography and radiology, and specialized inpatient critical care and rehabilitation units.
Pre-hospital care and transportation of trauma victims is provided by ground and air, including an ambulance specially designed to transport critically ill newborns. The neonatal ambulance team, consisting of an emergency medical technician, respiratory therapist and registered nurse, responds to any hospital request in Missouri. Boone County is the primary service area for the adult ambulance service, which responds to scene and inter-facility transport requests. Our paramedics and emergency medical technicians are trained in advanced life support for adults and children, as well as specialized care of trauma victims and extrication procedures.
