Flight crew training

Flight crew training
In 2003, University of Missouri Health Care became one of the first health care organizations in the country to adopt crew resource management training. Taught by professional pilots, the crew training teaches physicians, nurses and other health professionals the same techniques that have made flying famously safe.

Crew resource management is a form of team-based training with roots in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's program to train astronauts, which was adopted by pilots in the 1970s and '80s to improve flight safety. It was designed to reduce errors and improve communication in complex, high-stakes environments, such as space exploration and health care.

During training sessions, teams of MU Health Care employees learn and practice tools such as:

  • Proven techniques for teamwork and leadership
  • Methods for building situational awareness, recognizing safety red flags and intervening to solve potential problems
  • Assertive, professional communication
  • Communication techniques, such as team briefings, cross-checks and checklists

Since MU Health Care began crew training, more than 2,500 health care professionals have been trained at our hospitals and clinics. They have taken the tools they learned and implemented them throughout our organization to improve patient safety, such as implementing team debriefs after delivering babies in our Family Birth Center and after our TIGER Team responds to urgent medical calls, and introducing structured team pre-briefs in our interventional radiology suites.
