The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery designates centers of excellence
with excellent standards of patient care and effective results. Bariatric surgery, also called weight-loss surgery, refers to various surgical procedures that are used to treat morbid obesity.

To be designated as a Center of Excellence, bariatric surgery programs must have high surgical success rates, good short-term and long-term results, a comprehensive program and extensive experience. MU Health Care's Missouri Bariatric Services program was designated as a Center of Excellence in 2007.
