What to ask when selecting a plastic surgeon for cosmetic surgery?
It is important that you feel comfortable and confident with your surgeon. We encourage you to use the guide below when selecting any cosmetic surgeon.
Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
It is essential that you confirm your plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery under the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). ABPS certification means your surgeon under went six or more years of training beyond medical school and a rigorous process of testing and peer evaluation. American Board of Plastic Surgery certification means your surgeon has undergone extensive training in all areas of cosmetic surgery.
Are you a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?
In addition it is ideal to confirm that your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the largest and most respected group of plastic surgeons. This membership means your surgeon chooses to gain additional training and continuing education in his or her specific area of plastic surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery includes any procedure that is an elective enhancement to improve one's body.
What does this mean for me?
By ensuring that your surgeon is both ABPS certified and a member of the ASPS, you are ensuring you have selected a surgeon who is trained in all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
