Neurology
MU Children's Hospital's Pediatric Neurology Division offers the only dedicated pediatric neurology specialists in mid-Missouri. Our team of expert health care professionals is specifically trained to care for the unique needs of children suffering from developmental, behavioral or neurological disorders. Our vast array of team members work together to form a cohesive unit that specializes in providing each young patient the individualized care they need.
State-of-the-Art Medical Care
We are the only facility in mid-Missouri that offers patients access to board certified pediatric neurologists. All of the pediatric neurologists on our team are on the leading edge of medicine. As faculty members at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, these physicians often conduct pediatric neurology research and clinical trials, including a recent involvement in several studies concerning new seizure medication for children.
Children faced with complex developmental, behavioral or neurological disorders often require care from a team of physicians and therapists from several different medical sub-specialties. Our Pediatric Neurology Division is a part of Children's Hospital, a complete pediatric health care center with more than 26 different sub-specialty clinics. Our patients and their families have immediate access to pediatric psychologists, therapist, psychiatrists, geneticists, the Thompson Center for Autism, and other pediatric health care experts, dependent on each patient and family's specific needs.
Most of all, our team recognizes that no matter what illness they face, our patients are children. They are not just tiny adults, but unique individuals that require special attention and treatment plans tailored to their specific, pediatric needs.
Our Developmental Specialists
In the developmental focus area, our team offers evaluation services and healthcare management for children with developmental delays, behavior problems, Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and learning problems. Developmental and psychological assessments are available when needed. Our patients also have access to several specialty services including an ADHD assessment clinic and multidisciplinary clinics that offer specialized teams of developmentally oriented pediatricians, dietitians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech/language pathologists on an individualized basis.
Our Neurology Specialists
In the neurological focus area, our team offers comprehensive management for children with neurological problems including seizures, headaches, and neuromuscular diseases. Our patients have immediate access to a variety of specialized services including new technologies to improve seizure management and motor control.
In addition, the team provides long-term monitoring and follow-up for graduates of our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and for children who have complex medical-developmental problems.
Partnering With Parents
Our team works closely with each patient's family to ensure they understand the integral role they play in their child's health. Family members are included in every step of the diagnosis and treatment plan. Additionally, our team offers in-depth education for every family, providing them the tools they need to understand their child's illness and provide the best possible care. A registered nurse is on staff to answer any questions or concerns that the parents may have during their child's treatment.
Our team prides itself on returning phone calls in a timely manner, answering all questions honestly, reviewing test results with parents and the patients whenever it's possible and providing education and counseling on every child's diagnosis and treatments.
