University of Missouri Health Care News Releases
Children's Miracle Network Radiothon to benefit patients at new Children's Hospital

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Children’s Hospital is teaming up with the Children’s Miracle Network and Zimmer Radio Group to host the “Miracles for Kids” radiothon Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. Proceeds from the event will support the care of pediatric patients at Children’s Hospital’s new location at Columbia Regional Hospital.

Local radio stations 93.9-FM The Eagle, 94.3-FM KAT Country, 99.3-FM Clear 99 and 106.9-FM Y107 will broadcast live from University Hospital’s main lobby from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, through Friday, Oct. 2.

The radiothon will feature stories about children and families who have benefited from the many services provided by the Children’s Miracle Network. All funds raised will help enhance the treatment and care of area children with special needs such as cancer, blood disorders, birth defects, trauma injuries, cystic fibrosis, kidney transplant and more.

“All the money raised stays here in mid-Missouri to help local patients,” said Timothy Fete, M.D., medical director of Children’s Hospital, chair of the MU School of Medicine’s Department of Child Health and Children’s Miracle Network Professor in Pediatrics. “The radiothon gives listeners an opportunity to learn about and support the miracles that happen at our hospital every day.”

University of Missouri Health Care leaders announced in October 2008 a plan to consolidate more than 30 specialty pediatric services under one roof at Columbia Regional Hospital. The move will create mid-Missouri’s only stand-alone health care facility dedicated to pediatric patients.

Construction currently under way at Columbia Regional Hospital will provide patients and families with 100 percent private patient rooms in a newly updated, kid-friendly environment. The hospital’s location near the intersection of Highway 63 and Interstate 70 will provide convenient access for hospital patients and visitors.

“We’re building a dream home that will serve patients in mid-Missouri and beyond,” said Laura Gajda, executive director for advancement at MU Health Care. “To realize that dream, we rely on the outstanding support provided by Children’s Miracle Network and our community supporters. Together we share a vision of providing exceptional medical care to the children and families we serve.”

The Children's Miracle Network is a year-round fundraising program to benefit hospitals providing health care for children. Created by the Osmond Foundation in 1983, the Children’s Miracle Network includes more than 170 hospitals worldwide. Children’s Hospital is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric health care center in mid-Missouri.

Housed at University Hospital and Columbia Regional Hospital, the 115-bed hospital is the only facility in mid-Missouri offering comprehensive, specialized children’s services such as trauma care, neonatal transport, child life therapy, a pediatric intensive care unit and a pediatric hematology and oncology outpatient unit.
