COLUMBIA, Mo. ― University of Missouri Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s Department Stores are teaming up for a free bicycle helmet giveaway and fitting event from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 16, at MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s Conference Center, 404 Keene Street in Columbia.
The first 30 children 14 years and younger attending the event will receive a free bicycle helmet and fitting. Once the free helmets have been given away, the free fitting event will continue for any parents who want to have their child properly fitted for a bicycle helmet. Trained safety experts will also be available to answer questions from parents about bicycle safety.
The free helmets are provided thanks to Kohl’s annual support of the Kohl’s Safety Store at MU Children’s Hospital. The online store at www.muhealth.org/kohlssafetystore provides car seats, bicycle helmets and additional safety items to families in need in 10 mid-Missouri counties.
Kicking off the event, Kohl’s will renew its support of the Kohl’s Safety Store with a $42,672 donation to MU Children’s Hospital. Representatives from both organizations will attend the check presentation.
“We are grateful for Kohl’s continued support of MU Children’s Hospital and our efforts to prevent unintentional injuries in mid-Missouri children,” said Timothy Fete, M.D., medical director of Children’s Hospital, chair of the MU School of Medicine’s Department of Child Health and Children’s Miracle Network Professor in Pediatrics. “The Kohl’s Safety Store is a wonderful resource for families to receive life-saving safety equipment. We encourage anyone in need of these resources to contact MU Children’s Hospital.”
The Kohl’s Safety Store features a website where mid-Missouri families can go online to view available child safety items. The website also features instructions on how to order items.
Among the items available at the Kohl’s Safety Store are booster and high-back booster seats, child safety seats, bicycle helmets, personal flotation devices and reflective devices that allow children to be seen by motorists in the dark.
The Kohl’s Safety Store is designed to assist families who would not have the financial means to purchase these items without the assistance of the Safety Store. Families seeking assistance from the online store must live in one of the following 10 mid-Missouri counties to qualify for the safety items: Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Miller, Moniteau, Morgan or Randolph.
University of Missouri Health Care’s injury prevention program works to educate children and families on safety and preventing childhood injuries and death. The program has benefited from the generosity of Kohl’s. Since 2007, Kohl’s has donated approximately $200,000 to Children’s Hospital through the Kohl’s Cares program.
Kohl’s commitment to MU Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. Through this initiative, Kohl’s sells $5 books and plush toys where 100 percent of net profit benefits children’s health and education programs nationwide, including hospital partnerships.
