University of Missouri Health Care News Releases
Garden At MU Children's Hospital Designed To Promote Health, Education

COLUMBIA, Mo. ― University of Missouri Children’s Hospital’s Injury Prevention and Safety Outreach Program will use a $1,000 grant to launch a new youth community garden from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at Children’s Hospital, 404 N. Keene St.

MU Children’s Hospital was one of only five organizations nationwide to receive a $1,000 grant this year to start an educational youth community garden. Funding for the grant was provided by the National Gardening Association’s magazine, Gardening with Kids, and The Home Depot International.

“The primary goal of the garden is to provide a place where education and health unite to help us build strong and healthy children throughout our community,” said Michele Imes, coordinator for Children’s Hospital’s Injury Prevention and Safety Outreach Program. “Our hope is to continue to build this garden – and the opportunities it presents us with teaching children about healthy diet choices – for years to come.”

Members of MU Children’s Hospital, The Home Depot, the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture, Early Sprouts and local Girl Scouts of America will assist in planting vegetables in the garden on Sunday as part of the annual Earth Day celebration.
