COLUMBIA, Mo. — A first-of-its-kind program offered by Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Goldschmidt Cancer Center and the Mid-Missouri Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will help mid-Missouri women assess their risk for developing breast cancer.

“Breastology 101” is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Eldon Community Center, 309 East 2nd St. in Eldon. The program is free and open to the public. Each attendee will receive a backpack, educational materials and a chance to win door prizes.

Stacey Miller, M.S., C.G.C., a certified genetic counselor with Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, will lead the interactive program designed to educate and increase awareness about breast cancer risks, screening and prevention options. Miller is specially trained in cancer risk assessment and cancer genetics.

“All women are at risk for developing breast cancer, but the risk is different depending on any personal or family history risk factors,” said Miller. “Knowing your risk and doing something about your risk can save lives.”

Miller’s presentation will specifically focus on the following topics:

• Personal, environmental and family history risk factors
• Discussion of “average risk” versus “high risk” for breast cancer
• Recommended screenings for women
• Breast cancer prevention options
• Red flags for hereditary breast cancer
• How to get a personalized breast cancer risk assessment
• Breast cancer facts and statistics

“Breastology 101” is funded through a grant provided by the Mid-Missouri Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The grant was provided to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center to increase awareness and education about breast cancer through outreach programs such as “Breastology 101.”
