University of Missouri Health Care News Releases
Columbia Regional Hospital recognized as fit-friendly company
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The American Heart Association will recognize Columbia Regional Hospital as one of its fit-friendly companies during a ceremony at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in the 404 Diner at Columbia Regional Hospital.
Columbia Regional Hospital is the third University of Missouri Health Care hospital to receive the Fit-Friendly Award. University Hospital in Columbia and Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon both received the fit-friendly designation in 2008. The Healthy for Life: T.E. Atkins University of Missouri Wellness Program initiated the application process and helped secure the recognition for all University of Missouri Health Care hospitals.
The Fit-Friendly Award acknowledges Columbia Regional Hospital’s commitment to employee health and fitness. Columbia Regional Hospital offers workplace health benefits such as health screenings, a tobacco-free campus, smoking-cessation classes, Weight Watchers at Work, health risk assessments and access to walking trails near the hospital. Employees at Columbia Regional Hospital also participate in the annual Columbia Heart Walk.
“We are honored that the American Heart Association is recognizing Columbia Regional Hospital as a fit-friendly company,” said Keri Simon, executive director of Columbia Regional Hospital. “We are excited that many of our employees are taking advantage of the wellness programs at University of Missouri Health Care. By offering health and fitness activities, we are investing in our workforce and improving the lives of our employees.”
The American Heart Association’s Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Recognition program calls for employers to encourage workplace wellness and create a work environment conducive to physical activity, specifically walking. Columbia Regional Hospital, a part of the University of Missouri Health Care system, is full-service acute-care facility. The hospital has been named one of the nation’s top orthopaedic hospitals, and it offers the region’s most comprehensive medical team for mothers and newborns at its Family Birth Center, Missouri OB/GYN Associates, Missouri Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine and Ultrasound and newborn intensive care unit.
