Acute Care for Elders Unit

A team of specialists at University Hospital have developed mid-Missouri's only Acute Care for Elders (ACE) unit. The specialists in this unit work together with the goal of preventing functional decline when hospitalization occurs so patients get back home sooner. The ACE unit provides patients with access to specially-trained health care providers that help patients remain mobile and maintain their independence. From tracking and monitoring medications and their effects on the patient's physical and mental health, to rehab for a fracture due to a fall or weak bones, the team works together to provide effective patient-centered care. The interdisciplinary team consists of:

  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Nurses
  • Dietitians
  • Pharmacists
  • Geriatric consultants
  • Social workers

Studies show that patients admitted to an ACE unit from home spend less time in the hospital and return home more often, rather than being discharged to nursing facilities.

To speak to our staff about the benefits an ACE unit can provide you or a loved one, please call 573-884-6609.
