For Graduate Nurses
Nursing Residency Program

University of Missouri Health Care Nursing Residency Program

An innovative and exciting way our graduate nurses experience orientation.

MU Health Care's 12-month Nurse Residency program consists of seminars, hands-on training and online simulations that allow nurses to gain additional knowledge and training beyond what they would learn in a standard orientation program. This empowers them to continue their professional development while gaining on-the-job experience.

Who participates in the Nurse Residency Program?

  • Nurse must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing with less than six months experience as a registered nurse.
  • Nurse must have RN licensure or a permit to work as a graduate nurse pending licensure with the state of Missouri.

Program expectations

All nurse residents will participate in all scheduled residency seminars, as well as unit-based education. Within the first three months nurse residents will take part in a week-long education seminar consisting of lecture, hands-on skills, clinical simulations, and mock code experiences. They will be able to further develop their critical thinking abilities, and put skills learned in nursing school into practice in a safe learning environment.

Residency Seminars include the following topics:

  • Communication and Medication Safety
  • Wound/Skin Management and Ostomy Care
  • Cultural Diversity, Ethical Decision Making, and Palliative Care
  • Safe Lifting and Specialty Beds
  • Risk Management
  • Managing Psychiatric Issues, Lateral Violence, and Pain
  • Building Teamwork, Conflict Resolution, and Stress Management
  • Leadership at the Bedside
  • Professional Development
