Comprehensive team approach
The Kidney Transplant Program offers a depth of clinical expertise, research experience and an array of leading-edge resources for both pediatric and adult patients. Our transplant surgeons have performed almost 900 kidney transplants during more than 35 years. our multidisciplinary team of health-care professionals includes transplant surgeons, transplant nephrologists and pre-transplant and post-transplant coordinators, as well as dedicated nurses, social workers, a dietitian, financial coordinator and other health-care professionals.
During every stage of the process, our team cares for adult and pediatric patients and supports their families. Our specialists care for patients waiting for transplantation and upon entering the program, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation by all members of the comprehensive kidney transplant team. Each patient visits with a kidney transplant nurse coordinator to facilitate communication before and after transplant. A full spectrum of kidney care is available 24/7 to support and guide patients and their families during every phase of the transplant process, answering questions and linking them to other resources as needed. After transplantation, the team offers comprehensive followup care for our patients for the life of their transplant.
Our kidney specialists and staff also care for pediatric and adult patients for whom transplantation is not an option.
University of Missouri Health Care's program boasts one of the best acceptance rates in the nation. our average acute rejection rate is less than 10 percent vs. national average of approximately 15 percent. In the last five years, our Kidney Transplant Team has significantly reduced the length of stay and decreased the number of complications.
