Michael Cooperstock, M.D., an infectious disease specialist at University of Missouri Health Care provides a situational update on the H1N1 virus:
During November and early December, 2009 H1N1 influenza cases have decreased sharply in our area and across the country, although there continues to be a few cases. Additionally, a small number of seasonal influenza cases also have been found, mostly of the influenza B strain.
As winter arrives, 2009 H1N1 flu could return, or one or more of the seasonal influenza strains could become more epidemic, as in past years. It continues to be important for people to be immunized against both 2009 H1N1 and seasonal flu. Supplies of both the shot and nose spray for both vaccines now are much more widely available than they were a few weeks ago.
