Financial Information for Patients and Families
University of Missouri Health Care and University Physicians understand unexpected medical costs can be expensive and may cause a financial hardship for some of our patients. This information is designed to help you with calculating the cost of your care before treatment as well as for those who might need assistance with their bills after treatment.
Paying for your medical care
Patients with health insurance are expected to pay their co-pay or co-insurance at time of service.
Patients without health insurance:
- are expected to pay a deposit of $50 to $250 at the time of your doctor's appointment. The deposit will vary depending on the clinic and level of specialty care provided. The clinic will let you know how much you need to pay.
- are expected to pay a portion of cost for tests or procedures ordered by your physician as part of your care. Partial payment is expected prior to receiving the service.
You will be billed for the remaining amount due.
If you need assistance paying for your care, then you will be required to complete an application for Financial Assistance or future non-emergent appointments may be postponed.
Anyone who requires emergent, life threatening care will be treated regardless of ability to pay.
Financial Assistance
University of Missouri Health Care provides financial assistance in accordance to income based on percent of the Federal Poverty Level and ability to pay to uninsured and under insured patients who are a U.S. citizen and a Missouri resident, and who have healthcare needs that are emergent, urgent or medically necessary as part of our social responsibility.
Financial assistance is not provided for elective, cosmetic or packaged procedures or when there is another source of payment, including third party liable for care (e.g., accident or other third party responsibility).
Financial assistance is not considered an alternative option to payment. Patients:
- are expected to contribute payment for care based on their individual financial situation
- will be assisted in finding other means of payment/assistance before approval of uncompensated care
- may be encouraged to pursue health insurance if they have the financial ability to do so
When applying for financial assistance be as specific as possible when you complete application forms. Keep a copy of all applications you fill out.
MU Health Care Financial Counseling Services can help you determine your financial responsibility and explore options for paying for your care if you are uninsured. Financial counselors are available Monday through Friday.
