Acute Care Surgery
Acute Care Surgery, a division of the department of surgery, reflects the current model of combining the disciplines of trauma, burn, surgical critical care and emergency general surgery. A multidisciplinary team provides patient care, outreach education, and medical student and resident training, including ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) approved fellowship positions in surgical critical care and burn. Our surgical specialists are active in both clinical and basic science research.
The Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD Trauma Center at University Hospital is an American College of Surgeons verified Level I trauma center, one of only three such centers in Missouri. Our trauma center is recognized for meeting and exceeding the highest standards of care for the most critically injured patients. The George D. Peak Memorial Burn and Wound Center at University Hospital is the only burn center in the region. Our burn and wound center is also a leader in the treatment of burn-injured patients, and features a 14-bed dedicated burn intensive care unit.
Surgical intensivist coverage in the trauma-surgical intensive care unit and burn intensive care unit is coordinated through Acute Care Surgery. Our surgeons maintain an active general surgery practice, available for urgent inpatient and elective outpatient consultations.
