Pulmonary Rehabilitation

What is pulmonary rehab?
Fit for Life's pulmonary rehab program is designed to help individuals with chronic pulmonary diseases to improve their overall quality of life and functional status. A team of physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and dieticians develop an individualized program for each patient.

Who can benefit from pulmonary rehab?
Individuals with chronic pulmonary disease, affecting their functional status and quality of life. Patients with the following may be eligible for pulmonary rehab:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Restrictive lung disease

What are the possible benefits of pulmonary rehab?

  • Improved knowledge of pulmonary disease process and management
  • Improved quality of life
  • Increased strength and endurance
  • Increased support and motivation to help make important lifestyle changes
  • Decreased anxiety and fear of activities that cause increased shortness of breath
  • Decreased exacerbations and hospitalizations

What is included in the pulmonary rehab program?

  • Phase I pulmonary rehab
    If you are hospitalized with an acute pulmonary exacerbation, a pulmonary rehab nurse may be consulted to speak with you regarding your disease process management, activity progression, and risk factor modification.
  • Phase II pulmonary rehab
    Once an order from your physician for phase II pulmonary rehab is received, the Fit For Life staff will call you to discuss the program and schedule a start date.

What does the program include?

  • Medical evaluation
  • Monitored exercise
  • Risk factor management including: blood pressure, diabetes, weight, and smoking
  • Lifestyle education
  • Physical activity counseling
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Support
  • Communication with your referring physician
  • Energy Medicine classes

How long does the program last?
The length of the program varies from patient to patient; however, many patients may qualify for up to 36 sessions over a 12 week time period. Sessions are typically completed 3 times per week.

Where is the program located?
Fit for Life is conveniently located on the ground floor of University Hospital in GL-20 right below the main entrance. University Hospital also offers free valet service Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Is pulmonary rehab covered by insurance?
Many insurances, including Medicare, provide coverage for pulmonary rehab. We will assist with contacting your insurance company to determine coverage prior to your initial session.

What happens after completion of pulmonary rehab?
After completion of phase II pulmonary rehab, there are several options to maintain and continue to improve your quality of life and functional status. Fit for Life offers a phase III or maintenance pulmonary rehab program. This allows you to participate in supervised exercise. You may also feel comfortable enough to continue your exercise program at home or at a local gym. Regardless of the path you choose, we encourage you to continue working toward the successful management of living with a chronic pulmonary disease
